Ijazah?

bismillahirrahmannirahim~

(How to survive as a muslim syakaijin in Japan? )

Sharing from a muslim brother about his new life of being 社会人 (Syakaijin – Japanese company worker)  in Japan.

Assalamu Alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh

My dear brothers & sisters in Islam.

I do hope that my message finds you all in good condition of health & mood with strong iman(faith).

First of all, from the bottom of my heart, I would like to take this chance to congratulate those who are getting ready for the graduation ceremony tomorrow, the holiest day of the week: Jumah (Friday). I wish you nothing but the BEST of everything in both of your professional & personal life. May Allah subhana wa ta’ala continues pouring His blessings on you (all of us).

For those who are going to work in Japanese company, welcome to the new chapter of your life. I also would like to use this opportunity to share my experience in Japanese company  as Muslim as well as foreigner or “外国人”.

All the praise to our Creator who give me chance to be part of Japanese community & work with them. Last year, around this time I was so excited about becoming “shakaijin” & at the same time, I was worried about my faith & was asking myself like “will I be able to perform my prayers?” or “will I become one of those who went astray & leave my prayers by making excuses?” What if I can’t attend to weekly congregational Jumah prayer? How I’ll answer when they ask me for “Nomikai”? What I’ll do if they ask me to organize Nomikai for them? Because once I read a Hadith which is close to the meaning that Allah’s Messenger cursed ten people in connection with wine: the wine-presser, the one who has it pressed, the one who drinks it, the one who conveys it, the one to whom it is conveyed, the one who serves it, the one who sells it, the one who benefits from the price paid for it, the one who buys it, and the one for whom it is bought.

Hadith – Al-Tirmidhi #2776, Narrated Anas ibn Malik.

So the answers I had in my mind were like “I can’t pray my daily 5-time prayers, because Japanese companies doesn’t allow me to pray” or “I have to accept the attending the nomikais & organize Nomikais for them because it’s part of my job duty” or “I have to eat non-halal meat, or otherwise I cannot join to my colleagues group” and etc.

So I became a Shakaijin, nervousness, worries started bothering me inside… With the grace of Allah subhana wa ta’ala I had chance to talk about with HR manager regarding my condition as Muslim, alhamdulillah that I found that courage (which I couldn’t find before starting my job) to tell them that I needed to pray my daily prayers, and I don’t drink alcohol, & etc. After my conversation with them, Shaytan was telling me “They might not like you because you are different from others, because you don’t drink alcohol & etc” However, alhamdulillah that Allah  subhana wa ta’ala is so merciful that the next day they agreed for me to pray & arranged a room for me to pray in the company, started to ordering special seafood or vegetarian food when we have special events & etc., Even, I remember that once my colleagues organized a special dinner without alcohol. In some occasions they offer only soft drinks because I am among them. Once I read something like: “in life you will try to please everyone around you, and thus will usually lead to no one truly being pleased with you. Focus on pleasing, & attaining the pleasure of Allah and you will see how quickly the pleasure of those who count is attained.” Then I realized that we humans underestimate the mercy of Allah subhana wa ta’ala. If we we truly ask Him for His guidance from the bottom of our heart, he will make a way for us even though we think it’s impossible. When we dont drink, when we dont take a part in drinking parties & etc., might displease others, but Our actions are to please Allah subhana wa ta’ala who gave us this job, barakah/blessing. This is the one of the reason I wanted to share my story with all of you.

In addition, once you start your shakaijin life, it won’t be anymore any more student life. There will be lots of hardship, challenge in terms of cultures, working style & characters with your co-workers. Remember, you spent almost a year for your job hunting by doing your best! As say they Patience is the key to Success. So be patient & anytime you have trouble, stress, face hardship, dilemma get back to Allah by offering 2 rakats of Salah/Namaz/Prayer & ask Hid guidance & assistance.

We as Muslims should be a real role model to non-Muslims, Allah gave a Qur’an as a perfect guidance & our beloved Prophet (sallallahu alaihi waasalam) taught us how to be successful in this life & hereafter. Pay attention to the meaning of our Adhan (call for prayer) “…Hayya Allas Salah-Come/Hurry to the Prayer & Hayya Alal Falah-Come/Hurry to success (Rise up for Salvation). We have everything to be the most successful people in the world. Let’s try to put our leanings into practice & try to follow what Quran & Sunnah teaches us. We humans are weak, our iman/faith can be Up today but tomorrow might be down. So Salah/Namaz/Prayer is the key to keep our iman/faith stronger & lead us closer to Allah subhana wa ta’ala. We might be able to make it 100% perfect but let’s try to make it as perfect as we can. We do the action, barakah/result is from Allah  subhana wa ta’ala.

This is the REMINDER first for myself & then all you.

I would like to finish my mail with one of my favorite Hadith that the Prophet sal Allaahu alayhi wa sallam said to a man while he was advising him: Take benefit of five before five:

Your youth before your old age,

Your health before your sickness,

Your wealth before your poverty,

Your free-time before your preoccupation and Your life before your death.

[Prophet Muhammad sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam – Al-Haakim,

Al-Baihaqee: Saheeh]

This mail & my stories are ONLY as a encouragement & reminder for you. Keep up your inspiration & remember us in your special supplication.

Everything which is good in this message is from my pure intention & anything which is bad is from Shaytan.

May Allah Bless us All & assist us in all of our endeavors & make our iman stronger. Amiin!

Allah knows the best.

Jazak Allah Khair for your time

Sincerely ,

your brother in Islam.
